HOW TO CHOOSE BETWEEN OCTC AND OLTC TRANSFORMER

Followings points are considered before deciding which transformer to choose:

1. Voltage Fluctuation:

a) Off Circuit Tap Changer OCTC : If incoming supply voltage remain mostly stable.

b) On Load Tap Changer OLTC    : If incoming supply voltage fluctuates frequently and needs automatic correction.

2. Shutdown Requirement:

a)  Off Circuit Tap Changer OCTC : Tap Changer can only be operated after switching the transformer OFF.

b)  On Load Tap Changer OLTC    : It operates automatically without switching the transformer OFF.

3. Costing Factor

a).Off Circuit Tap Changer OCTC : Low Initial cost & maintenance.

b). On Load Tap Changer OLTC   : High initial cost & maintenance.
